Chamaecyparis pisifera         ‘Avenue’ false-cypress            Loc. C25

This is a Connecticut Champion Tree

The Branford Town Green has 1 Avenue False Cypress in its inventory

Did You Know?  This particular tree is extremely rare and more well known overseas. We were able to find the original which is Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Avenue' on: Hull Farm, Essex UK c. 1988.
The reason the name is 'Avenue' is because it's similar to a more well-known tree called Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Boulevard', also called "Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Squarrosa Avenue'. Quoting world renowned conifer enthusiast Edwin Smits: "Unfortunately I don't have pics of the 'Avenue'. But I can tell you that I've made several thousand cuttings of this one and will recognize it from all the other conifers by its’ typical foliage structure. I even can recognize it by its’ special smell!! The Branford specimen is a very old one with a single leader which still give it a nice shape. Most of the time this cultivar has multiple leaders and will fall apart by heavy snow. People will get rid of it then and that's why there are not many old specimens left of it."

Avenue False-Cypress, at 10 years about 1 m tall, spherical, dense, slow-growing, feather-like in appearance; foliage soft, blue, purplish or deep pinkish bronze in winter; sport on 'Boulevard', introduced by Wansdyke Nursery, England, 1979.
