Branford Town Green Tree Information
*Please Note: The Branford Town Tree Guide is a work in progress. On the following pages you will find a sampling of the project...
=======================================================
Welcome to the Branford Town Green Tree Guide, created by the Branford Green Committee. The Green Committee was founded in 2001. It has members from First Congregational Church, Baptist Church, Trinity Church, Chamber of Commerce, Forestry Commission, Historical Society, Branford Garden Club and the Academy on the Green. All of our meetings are open to the public. The Committee reports to the First Selectman.
The Branford Green Committee is charged with advising the First Selectman regarding the fauna on the Branford Green. The Committee also acts as a guardian of the Green in all aspects. In effect it balances the preservation of the historical nature of the Green with the need to enhance it to meet the needs of the modern world.
The Green is divided in four distinct sections. Each section has a focal point that has been created over centuries of use by the citizens of Branford. Section A is Town Green proper – the large greenspace that the community uses for its’ annual festival, concerts, Christmas Tree lighting, craft fairs, book sales, and many more events that bind the community together. Section B has several focal points – Trinity Church, Academy on the Green, Town Hall, and the World War I Cenotaph. Section C has as its’ focal point, First Congregational Church, and Section D has as its’ focal point, Baptist Church. Each section is divided by roadways that connect to Town Hall and the three churches, while each section is crisscrossed by walkways that make the entire Green accessible to everyone.
As you stroll the Green, you gain access to its’ more than 130 trees (see Section 2, Addendum 1), ranging from 5-year-old new plantings, to stately mature specimens, some over 150 years old.
The trees are a mix of very mature specimens, new plantings, as well Notable and Champion Trees of CT. What is a Notable or Champion Tree? (see Addendum 5)
This Guide will introduce you to our Town Green Trees, help you learn more about them, and allow you to see more than just the greenspace on Main St in front of Town Hall.
Do you have large, rare, or just a plain old, awesome tree on your property? Find out how to see how ‘notable’ it really is!! Click this link http://oak.conncoll.edu:8080/notabletrees/\\
