Copies of Birth, Death or Marriage Certificates

You must provide a photocopy of a government-issued photo I.D. (driver's license or passport) to order a certificate copy of a vital record, whether you order in-person, online, or by mail.

Birth Certificates  $20  (Note, wallet-sized certificates are no longer accepted as proof of birth)
Records of births that have occurred within the state of Connecticut may be obtained in any of the following three locations: 1). The town where the birth occurred (hospital town) 2). the town in which the mother resided at the time of birth of the baby, and 3). at the Department of Public Health in Hartford. Birth Certificates may be issued on one of the following conditions:

  • By order of a court of competent jurisdiction.
  • Upon written request of the person whose birth is recorded, if of age.
  • Upon request of a state department or the Federal government, when approved by the state department of health.
  • Upon written request of a parent or other lawful representative of such person (with proper identification).
  • Spouse.
  • Children, if of legal age.
  • Grandparents of minors.

Death Certificates $20
If the death occurred in Branford, or the decedant's residence was in Branford at the time of death, the death certificate is filed in the Branford Town Clerk's office.  A certified copy for $20 may be requested in-person, online, or by mail. Photo identification is required.  (Convenience fee for online orders.)

Marriage Certificates $20
Couples who were married in Branford or living in Branford at the time of marriage can obtain certified copies from the Branford Town Clerk. A certified copy for $20 may be requested in-person or online. Photo identification is required.  (Convenience fee for online orders.)
