Overview of Town vs. State Roads

Branford Department of Public Works maintains and manages all roads and streets that fall under the Town's municipal authority however certain roads and intersections fall under the State's jurisdiction and are therefore maintained by the CT Department of Transportation (DOT). Please consult this guide to determine if your inquiry would be best addressed by Town or State authorities.

The following roads and are maintained by the STATE:

  • Route 139 / North Branford Rd. and Branford Rd.
  • Route 146 / Main St. from Route 1 to S Main St., Montowese and South Montowese St., Sybil Ave., Limewood Ave. to Elizabeth St., to Pine Orchard Rd. to Blackstone Ave. to Totoket Rd., Stony Creek Rd. to Leetes Island Rd.
  • Route 1 / West Main St., N Main St., E Main St.
  • Route 740/ Cedar St. and Brushy Plains Rd. (From intersection of Route 1 and Cedar North).
  • Route 142 / Short Beach Rd. to Shore Dr.

All other public roads in Branford are managed and maintained by Branford DPW. State Routes can be found using the CT-DOT mapping system found HERE. Chose the ‘State Routes’ option and either search or zoom to Branford, CT.

For State Roads..

To speak with someone regarding an issue on a State-maintained road or intersection, (e.g. broken mailbox, traffic light, paving or plowing concern, pothole, etc.) please contact the Connecticut Department of Transportation Maintenance Garage.
