For Immediate Release June
1, 2009.
On Monday, June 15, 2009, the Town of
Branford
will hold a public forum on the 2009 Town
Green Study now drawing to a conclusion. The
meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the
Blackstone Memorial Library,
758 Main Street,
Branford.
This latest plan incorporates
revisions made in response to public
comments offered at a public meeting on
March 24, 2009.
The
2009 Town Green Study addresses the last
phase of the Town Center Revitalization Plan
initiated in 1983 and includes the area
bounded by Main, South Main, and Montowese
Streets as well as the municipal parking lot
at the corner of South
Main and Montowese Streets.
Earlier phases of Town Center
Revitalization, which included a municipal
parking lot, brick sidewalks, benches, and
decorative outdoor lighting, were completed
in the early 1990s.
As
First Selectman Anthony DaRos noted, “Much
of what you see on the Green today was never
planned.
Changes happened
haphazardly over the years to meet
particular needs without regard for the big
picture.
Our goal here is
to lay down a template for future
improvements and reverse some of the
mistakes of the past.”
A
primary goal of both the 1983 and 2009 plans
is to enhance the continuity of green space
along
Main Street
by reducing the expanse of asphalt at the
intersection of Town Hall Drive, Taintor Drive and Blackstone Avenue with Main Street. The plan also incorporates
improvements to pedestrian and driver
safety, emergency access to buildings, and
parking.
